Chapter 23

The courtroom lights dimmed, and Wendy’s beautiful, smiling face appeared on the overhead at the front of the courtroom. I stood frozen for a moment as the door slowly began to close. The screen changed. Johnson played a video of Wendy’s last birthday party before her accident. She was laughing, dancing, sticking her tongue out at the camera. A second later, the video cut to Wendy in her hospital bed last year. Her mother sang to her. Her mouth hung open, but she seemed to be trying to smile as her mother showed her a pink mylar balloon.

The courtroom door shut. Jeanie was right. It didn’t quite close all the way. The door on the right stuck out, leaving maybe a two-inch gap which allowed me to hear everything going on and see the back of the lectern where Rafe stood.

Arms came around me. “Come on, Cass,” Joe said. “Sit with us. It’s going to be a long day.”

I hugged him. “I’m glad you’re here. If you’d have told me beforehand, I would have told you to stay away.”

He laughed and whispered, “We know. Why do you think we kept our mouths shut? You’re the one who always says it’s better to apologize instead of ask for permission.”

“We’re not sorry though.” Matty smiled. Vangie playfully punched him in the arm.

I went with Joe and sat between them. From here, I had a clear view into that small gap in the door.

Rafe’s video ended. “Wendy Wray was everything you see in that video. Young. Beautiful. Fun-loving. She volunteered at the local animal shelter in her spare time. She loved her job. Her co-workers. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than helping other people build their dreams. That’s what she strove to do as one of the top real estate agents in the county. Her clients became more than that. They became her friends. One night, four years ago, that light got snuffed out. You’ll hear how one instant on a winding stretch of road changed everything. How the light in Wendy’s eyes went out. But it didn’t go out completely. Even in her convalescence, Wendy brought joy to those who loved her. Her mother and father. Her closest friends. She was a human being. She could still feel. Still smile. Still bring joy and experience joy. She had purpose. She had a future.

“But to that man sitting before you, Wendy became a burden. A chain around his neck. He’d moved on. Found someone new. Eric Wray was done with Wendy. So he tried to throw her out like yesterday’s garbage.”

I went rigid. Joe tightened his grip around me.

“You’ll hear how Eric Wray bided his time,” Rafe continued. “How he connived and manipulated doctors and the court system to try to get them to give up on Wendy so he could move on to his new life. How he lied to Wendy’s family and tried to drive a wedge between them even before Wendy’s accident. How his anger and need for revenge against her drove every action he took.
